Help for Menopausal Symptoms

Vaihdevuosiklinikka provides comprehensive treatment for menopausal symptoms for women.

The treatment package includes appointments with a physician and a nutritionist. Adjusting lifestyle habits is an important cornerstone of health. Diverse and effective forms of treatment help restore health. We strive to support the patient in restoring their health.

To relieve bothersome symptoms, we often use hormone therapy in the initial phase. When general health has improved through lifestyle changes and treatments, hormone therapy can often be reduced and later discontinued.

To treat vaginal dryness, we use local preparations, hormones, and PRP treatment (Platelet-Rich Plasma). PRP improves the elasticity and moisture balance of the mucous membranes.

One of our device-based treatments is papimi. The treatment may improve the absorption of medications and supplements, relieve symptoms of urinary incontinence, and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.

We provide guidance and support regarding menopausal changes, disease prevention, and maintaining health. Our approach is holistic and takes individual needs and wishes into account.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence can result from various factors. The most common types in women are stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and mixed incontinence. While lifestyle changes are considered the foundation of treatment for all types, there are also specific therapies targeted for each condition.

Medication

Approximately one third of continence is believed to depend on the condition of the mucous membranes. Local estrogen therapy improves the health of these tissues, which can help reduce urinary incontinence symptoms.
Oral mirabegron may help ease symptoms of urge urinary incontinence by relaxing the bladder muscle.

Weight Management

Weight loss has been clinically shown to improve symptoms of urinary incontinence. Therefore, it is the first-line treatment for individuals who are overweight.

Exercise and Pelvic Floor Muscle Training

Regular physical activity increases blood vessel density in the body, which can enhance the function of the pelvic floor muscles.
Targeted pelvic floor exercises, whether guided or self-directed, effectively reduce symptoms of stress incontinence.

Papimi (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy)

Papimi therapy is a non-invasive method that uses pulsed electromagnetic fields to influence body cells. The treatment may help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and improve their function, which can reduce urinary incontinence.
Benefits include:

  • safe and non-invasive

  • no side effects

  • no need to undress during treatment

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

PRP therapy uses growth factors derived from the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma. PRP may increase blood circulation in the pelvic floor and improve tissue elasticity, helping reduce urinary incontinence.
Benefits include:

  • natural, biologically based treatment

  • uses the body’s own material

  • low risk of adverse effects

Exercise

Regular physical activity benefits many aspects of health and is one of the cornerstones of managing menopausal symptoms. The goal is at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week.

Relaxation and Stress Management

The body experiences stress from many sources. Managing stress levels can have a positive effect on menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes.

Weight Management and Nutrition

Excess weight—especially around the midsection—creates a chronic low-grade inflammatory state in the body, which has harmful effects throughout the system. Proper nutrition helps control weight and reduce inflammation.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Simple lifestyle changes can make a significant difference. These may include wearing light, breathable clothing, keeping your environment cool, avoiding spicy foods and caffeine, and managing stress using relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation.

Supplements

Some women find relief from hot flashes with herbal supplements such as black cohosh, soy, and red clover.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture may offer relief from hot flashes for some women. It uses thin needles placed at specific points on the body to help balance energy flow.

Behavioral Therapy

Techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) have been shown to help manage hot flashes by reducing stress and changing how individuals respond to symptoms.

Cooling Products

Use cooling tools such as cooling pillows, fans, or cooling towels to help lower body temperature.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Estrogen therapy can often relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. Treatment duration is typically a few years, depending on individual needs and medical evaluation.

Lubricants

Lubricants are gel- or liquid-based products, either water- or oil-based. They are designed to increase moisture and make intercourse more comfortable.

Moisturizers and Other Intimate Care Products

Vaginal moisturizers are creams or gels formulated to hydrate the vaginal mucosa. Modern moisturizers may contain ingredients such as lactic acid, which helps normalize the vaginal pH.

Local Estrogen Treatments

These products contain small amounts of estrogen (estriol, estrone, or estradiol). When used regularly, they help strengthen the vaginal mucosa, reducing dryness and other intimate symptoms.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

Platelets contain growth factors that support tissue healing and regeneration. The advantage of PRP therapy is its natural origin, which reduces the risk of adverse effects. The results typically last 6–12 months.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If intercourse feels painful, it is advisable to schedule a consultation with a gynecologist.

It is important to acknowledge a simple truth: almost all women experience changes in sexual pleasure during menopause.
Hormonal shifts reduce natural lubrication, tissue elasticity, and blood flow in the intimate area. This often leads to discomfort, reduced sensitivity, and even loss of sexual desire. Stress, fatigue, and life changes can make the situation even more challenging.

But the good news is that you do not have to accept these changes as permanent. There are effective treatments that can restore comfort, sensitivity, and confidence—helping pleasure return naturally.

Lubricants – instant comfort

When dryness becomes noticeable, lubricants offer immediate relief by reducing friction and making intercourse smoother and more enjoyable.

Vaginal Moisturizers – long-lasting hydration

As tissues become thinner and more fragile, sensitivity may decrease. Moisturizers help hydrate and support the mucosa while maintaining healthy pH, improving long-term comfort and pleasure.

Local Estrogen Therapy – restoring natural function

Lower estrogen levels are one of the main reasons for pain and discomfort during intimacy. Local estrogen rebuilds mucosal strength, increases elasticity, and restores natural moisture—making intimacy feel good again.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) – rejuvenation from within

When menopause reduces blood flow and tissue vitality, PRP can reverse these changes. Using your own growth factors, PRP:

  • increases circulation

  • improves elasticity

  • enhances sensitivity

  • boosts natural moisture

Many women report noticeably improved pleasure and comfort for 6–12 months after treatment.

Low Libido – addressing the root causes

Decreased sexual desire is extremely common, often driven by stress, fatigue, relationship factors, and hormonal changes. Lifestyle adjustments can help restore balance, and in some cases estrogen or testosterone therapy may provide additional support.

You Are Not Alone — and There Are Solutions

Nearly every woman faces these changes at some point. You don’t have to suffer silently or accept discomfort as part of life.
With the right support and treatment, sexual pleasure, comfort, and confidence can return—often better than before.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

HRT often reduces menopause-related sleep disturbances such as insomnia and nighttime hot flashes. It can improve sleep quality and reduce fatigue.

Medications

Sleep medications may help improve sleep quality and reduce fatigue during menopausal symptoms. They are recommended only for short-term use, as the body may develop tolerance.

Lifestyle Changes

Healthy lifestyle habits—such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress-management techniques—can promote better sleep and reduce fatigue during menopause.

Relaxation and Mindfulness Practices

Relaxation exercises and mindfulness techniques can help reduce stress and anxiety, which may improve sleep quality and decrease fatigue. Practicing yoga can also have beneficial effects.

Non-Pharmacological Treatments

Acupuncture, massage therapy, and reflexology are examples of non-pharmacological treatments that may promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

These treatments offer the benefit of enhancing sleep quality and reducing fatigue during menopause. It is important to discuss the most suitable treatment options and their benefits with your physician.

Diet, Exercise, and Rest

You are what you eat—more true than most of us realize. Western diets often fail to provide the essential nutrients needed for optimal health, despite common claims.
To lower the body’s stress load, regular physical activity is crucial; humans are designed to move. Adequate rest—at least 7 hours per night—is also vital for overall health and hormonal balance.

Cholesterol Hormones

The body needs cholesterol to produce steroid-based hormones in the adrenal glands, ovaries, and adipose tissue. Because the body produces only part of what is required, the rest must come from the diet.

Estrogen

The female hormone estradiol is produced in the ovaries, testes, and adipose tissue. A balanced diet and healthy lifestyle are important for preventing deficiency. When symptoms occur, estradiol can be provided as a medication.

Progesterone

Progesterone, produced by the ovaries, balances the effects of estradiol in the body. It is often an important component of estrogen replacement therapy.

Testosterone

Women also produce testosterone. One of its most well-known effects is increasing sexual desire.

Cortisol

Cortisol is a stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Chronic stress can deplete adrenal function, leading to weakened overall hormonal activity.

Thyroxine (T4)

Thyroxine, produced by the thyroid gland, affects every tissue in the body. Imbalances have been identified as contributing factors in infertility and symptoms resembling menopausal complaints.

Insulin

A diet high in refined carbohydrates causes repeated spikes in insulin levels. Over time, these spikes lead to insulin resistance and eventually to type 2 diabetes.
The most effective way to regulate insulin levels is by improving dietary habits and overall lifestyle.

enopause is not a disease, but a natural stage of life—and your well-being during this transition depends on the overall balance of your body. In fact, menopause is one of the best and most important moments to make positive lifestyle changes. Nutrition, exercise, rest, and stress management all influence your hormonal balance, and it is always the relationship between hormones that matters—not just the decline in estrogen.

An unhealthy diet and chronic stress disrupt glucose metabolism, which in turn contributes to premature aging, fatty liver, and thyroid dysfunction.

With individualized nutrition coaching tailored specifically to you, we can support the health of your gut, liver, and thyroid. You may sleep better, experience improved mood, and reduce excess abdominal fat.

The goal of our Menopause Nutrition Coaching is to increase healthy, vibrant years of life—even small changes can make a meaningful difference.
